Ascophyllum nodosum — sometimes called knotted wrack, rockweed, or Norwegian kelp — is a species of brown seaweed that grows abundantly along the North Atlantic coastlines of Canada, Iceland, Norway, and the British Isles. It's one of the most extensively studied marine algae in the world, with applications ranging from agricultural fertilizer to human health supplements.
In the context of animal dental health, it refers specifically to a processed, dried extract of the seaweed that concentrates the bioactive compounds responsible for its oral health effects. The extract that appears most frequently in veterinary and pet dental research is standardized to ensure consistent potency — raw seaweed from different harvests can vary significantly in its active compound concentration, so reputable products use a controlled extract rather than generic kelp powder.
Not all kelp is created equal. The difference between a product listing "kelp" and one specifying "Ascophyllum nodosum" is often the difference between a marketing ingredient and a clinically studied one.
The Mechanism: How It Gets Into the Saliva
